On Convergence of Emphatic Temporal-Difference Learning
نویسنده
چکیده
We consider emphatic temporal-difference learning algorithms for policy evaluation in discounted Markov decision processes with finite spaces. Such algorithms were recently proposed by Sutton, Mahmood, and White (2015) as an improved solution to the problem of divergence of off-policy temporal-difference learning with linear function approximation. We present in this paper the first convergence proofs for two emphatic algorithms, ETD(λ) and ELSTD(λ). We prove, under general off-policy conditions, the convergence in L for ELSTD(λ) iterates, and the almost sure convergence of the approximate value functions calculated by both algorithms using a single infinitely long trajectory. Our analysis involves new techniques with applications beyond emphatic algorithms leading, for example, to the first proof that standard TD(λ) also converges under off-policy training for λ sufficiently large.

Some Simulation Results for Emphatic Temporal-Difference Learning Algorithms
This is a companion note to our recent study of the weak convergence properties of constrained emphatic temporal-difference learning (ETD) algorithms from a theoretic perspective. It supplements the latter analysis with simulation results and illustrates the behavior of some of the ETD algorithms using three example problems.
متن کاملEmphatic Temporal-Difference Learning
Emphatic algorithms are temporal-difference learning algorithms that change their effective state distribution by selectively emphasizing and de-emphasizing their updates on different time steps. Recent works by Sutton, Mahmood and White (2015), and Yu (2015) show that by varying the emphasis in a particular way, these algorithms become stable and convergent under off-policy training with linea...
متن کاملWeak Convergence Properties of Constrained Emphatic Temporal-difference Learning with Constant and Slowly Diminishing Stepsize
We consider the emphatic temporal-difference (TD) algorithm, ETD(λ), for learning the value functions of stationary policies in a discounted, finite state and action Markov decision process. The ETD(λ) algorithm was recently proposed by Sutton, Mahmood, and White [47] to solve a long-standing divergence problem of the standard TD algorithm when it is applied to off-policy training, where data f...
متن کاملTrue Online Emphatic TD($\lambda$): Quick Reference and Implementation Guide
This document is a guide to the implementation of true online emphatic TD(λ), a model-free temporal-difference algorithm for learning to make long-term predictions which combines the emphasis idea (Sutton, Mahmood & White 2015) and the true-online idea (van Seijen & Sutton 2014). The setting used here includes linear function approximation, the possibility of off-policy training, and all the ge...
متن کاملConsistent On-Line Off-Policy Evaluation
The problem of on-line off-policy evaluation (OPE) has been actively studied in the last decade due to its importance both as a stand-alone problem and as a module in a policy improvement scheme. However, most Temporal Difference (TD) based solutions ignore the discrepancy between the stationary distribution of the behavior and target policies and its effect on the convergence limit when functi...
